The goal of this project is to develop a scalable outreach program that brings urban forestry education and climate change awareness to disadvantaged communities in San Diego County. Smart Roots will supplement existing mass tree plantings hosted by Tree San Diego by amplifying virtual Tree Steward trainings and providing educational material to stakeholders.

Training and education materials will provide tree canopy expansion​ and urban forestry information including tree benefits, planting and maintenance instructions, and water-wise best practices to local communities. Most tree planting programs have a range of economic, social, and environmental benefits.
