Surf & Turf
Program Summary
Treejectory’s 20th module, Surf & Turf, will introduce workforce development participants to the connection between urban forestry, stormwater management and coastal ecosystems. Instruction from sector-leading experts will demonstrate how land-based practices (e.g. tree planting, restoration, and introduction of green infrastructure) directly influence water quality, biodiversity, and climate resilience across the region.
Trees support watersheds flowing into the ocean by acting as natural filters and stabilizers, reducing polluted runoff by up to 55% and absorbing large volumes of rainwater. Their roots bind soil to prevent erosion, while canopies shade water, reducing temperatures and mitigating flash floods before water reaches the coast.

Program Details
WEBINAR
Talk to leaders in the environmental industry and explore watershed systems, stormwater pathways, carbon cycles and ways urban forestry contributes to regional ecological health.
OCEAN EXCURSION
Join coastal naturalists for an
open-boat ocean experience highlighting how inland land-use and urban trees shape coastal water quality, marine habitats and regional biodiversity.
TREE TREK
A land-based lesson led by ISA Certified Arborist, connecting coastal observations back to urban forestry, soil health and stormwater management. Bringing the learning full circle, from mountain to sea.

O’side Whales offers intimate, small-group whale watching experiences out of Oceanside, California. With just six guests per trip, their fast, agile vessel allows for up-close encounters with whales, dolphins, and other marine life. Led by experienced captains and marine naturalists, each tour blends adventure with education, fostering a deeper connection to the ocean. O'side Whales operates year-round, following seasonal migrations and prioritizing safe, respectful wildlife viewing.
Ocean Connectors works to educate students and connect community members with the ocean in order to provide access to diverse, hands-on learning opportunities in coastal environments. Their team aims to increase academic engagement, support classroom learning goals, and motivate them to pursue ocean-STEM careers, while inspiring youth and environmental stewardship through actively practicing conservation best practices.
From tree-planting and Tree Stewards training to community engagement and workforce development, the Tree San Diego team has provided the residents of San Diego County with all they need to know about trees, the benefits they provide, and the skills they need to care for them. With more than 15,000 trees planted and distributed through various projects and programs, Tree San Diego continues expand the region's urban forest with municipalities, NGOs, and communities.
Groundwork San Diego-Chollas Creek works at the intersection of social, environmental, and climate justice, grounded in strong university and community partnerships, to deliver education, green infrastructure, and climate safe neighborhoods. Their projects focus on expanding new parks and green spaces, creating trails and bike paths that also support creek-to-bay trail networks.
